About some words

Posted on

I was just catching up on my Google Reader, and I noticed that GOM distinctly called the recent holiday ‘Labor, not Labour’ day – probably because he has a blog friend in Australia… anyways, that got my brain to thinking… why the differences? Well, of course because we were a British colony (longer than the US), and still have British influences in our daily life.

I was going to post some ‘Canadian’ terms that Americans might not be familiar with, including their definitions, but instead, maybe my (two) readers would like to guess the meanings! Feel free to copy and paste into comments or on your own blog! Fun!

I’ll give some examples, and some hints…

1)          Kiki would say, ‘I’m going to wedge!’

I would say, ‘I’m going to hodge!’

BMW might say ‘I’m going to monge‘ (that’s not really how it’s spelled, but that’s how it’s said)..

2)      Eavestroughs (that one should be easy)

3)      Garburator (I thought everyone called them garburators… also easy I think…)

4)      Homo milk

5)      Hydro (should be easy)

6)      Pogey

7)      ‘On the dole’

8)       Double double

9)       Timmies or ‘a Tim’s’

Kiki: Want a Tim’s?

Me: Sure, I’ll take a medium double double

10)       Twenty sixer

11)        Forty

12)       Two four

13)        Newfie

14)       Back bacon

15)       Gasbar (should be easy… I never realized this was a Canadian thing… not sure it really is)

16)       Deke

17)       Concession (it’s a rural thing….)

18)       Pickerel

19)       Pissed

20)      F**k the dog (I think American use this expression….)

21)      Frog  (it’s a derogatory term….)

22)      Hose  (like not the garden type…)

23)      The Peg

24)      Rippers

25)      Hummer (not the kind you drive…)

26)      Squatch

27)      Gunt (it’s rude!)

27)      Thongs (not the underwear)

28)      KD (I think everyone says this too)

No cheating! I’ll post answers if anyone posts their guesses!

    1) Kiki would say, ‘I’m going to wedge!’

I believe you mean eat or eat a lot. I have never heard wedge though. Is it a Kiks thing?
    2) Eavestroughs (that one should be easy)

I almost couldn’t think of the word gutters in order to respond.

    3) Garburator (I thought everyone called them garburators… also easy I think…)

Garbage disposal, usually found connected to a sink drain.
    4) Homo milk

Homogenized (spelling is wrong I’m sure) or whole milk that has I believe 3 or 3.25% MF.
    5) Hydro (should be easy)

Electricity that runs to our homes. May be an Ontario thing due to the hydro electric dams in places like Niagara Falls.
    6) Pogey

    Currently known as employment insurance.

    7) ’On the dole’

Stands for “Department of Labour” I believe and is much like Pogey or welfare.

    8) Double double

A coffee with double cream and double sugar, usually at Tim Horton’s which is where the phrase originates.
    9) Timmies or ‘a Tim’s’

    A coffee from Tim Horton’s

    Kiki: Want a Tim’s?

Me: Sure, I’ll take a medium double double

    10) Twenty sixer

A 26 oz. bottle of liquor, for example vodka, rum or rye.

    11) Forty
A 40 oz bottle of liquor

    12) Two four
Two references, first a full 24 bottle case of beer and second Victoria day holiday in May, known as May two four

    13) Newfie

    Someone from Newfoundland.

    14) Back bacon
Peameal Bacon or Canadian bacon as our US friends call it.

    15) Gasbar (should be easy… I never realized this was a Canadian thing… not sure it really is)

A gas station that is normally self service and does not have mechanics’ services. Originally from the Canadian Tire franchise, I believe.
    16) Deke

Is this how this is spelled? I always thought it was deak. It refers to what you might call a faint or fake in other sports to get around an opponent.

    17) Concession (it’s a rural thing….)

This is a rural road, usually belonging to a set of numbered roads that do not have proper names like Cherrywood. Farms are usually located along these roads.
    18) Pickerel

Pickerel is a type of fish and I have seen this name used in US aquariums, so it must b more than just us.

    19) Pissed

Two possible meanings: Pissed drunk or pissed angry.

    20) F**k the dog (I think American use this expression….)

Also screw the pooch meaning to do nothing or get nothing done at work due to messing around and avoiding it.

    21) Frog (it’s a derogatory term….)

    French or french-Canadian person

    22) Hose (like not the garden type…)

To rip someone off or cheat or swindle someone out of money.

    23) The Peg

Winnipeg, Manitoba. Also known as winterpeg

    24) Rippers

    Strippers

    25) Hummer (not the kind you drive…)

Refers to fellatio ( spelling could be off).

    26) Squatch

As in sasquatch or Bigfoot? Or do you mean skatch as in person from Saskatchewan?

    27) Gunt (it’s rude!)

I think I know what this is, can it also be said gint? I believe it refers to female genitalia.

    27) Thongs (not the underwear)

    Footwear like Flip flops.

    28) KD (I think everyone says this too)

    Kraft Dinner!

Just off the top of my head guesses – no googling!

    1. eat or snack?
    2. I’m guessing gutters for roofs
    3. garbage disposal?
    4. I won’t say what I want to say … real guess is whole milk
    5. electricity (from hydroelectric power)
    6. pogey … no idea, sounds like a sandwich
    7. on welfare (or gov’t support), I think
    8. double double – no idea, sounds like a Starbuck’s order
    9. Ok … I know Tim Horten was a hockey player and opened diners across Canada that (I think) were famous for donuts … so I’m guessing it’s something from one of those places, possibly the donut itself?
    10. Twenty sixer – no idea. something beer related?
    11. Forty – here that means a 40 oz. bottle of (usually) malt liquor … same there?
    12. Two four – no idea, no guess
    13. Newfie – someone from Newfoundland, or maybe the breed of dog
    14. Back bacon – I’m guessing this is “American” bacon, since what you folks call bacon is what we call thinly sliced ham …
    15. Gasbar – hmmm, no idea. A gasoline pump or station?
    16. Deke – don’t know, unless you spelled an unflattering term for a lesbian incorrectly, lol.
    17. Concession – a rural thing? Maybe farm subsidy payments? Or a roadside fruit stand? Maybe a Farmer’s Market?
    18. Pickerel – isn’t that a fish?
    19. Pissed means drunk in England (angry here), so I’m guessing it also means drunk in Canada.
    20. Another one where I won’t post my first guess … no idea. Unless it’s the same as “Screw the pooch” which means totally fail at something.
    21. Frog – I’m guessing Frenchman
    22. hose – I remember way back on SCTV people calling each other hosers, but have no idea what it means
    23. Have no idea
    24. Rippers? – scissors?
    25. Hummer – I’d be bleeped for saying what that means here, unless you’re talking about a hummingbird.
    26. Squatch? no idea
    27. Gunt – odd, because I usually know all the “rude” ones, but I don’t know. I’m guessing it’s the same thing referred to as the “c-word” here … an offensive term for a woman?
    27. Thongs are probably flip flops. (there were TWO 27’s …)
    28. KD … kidding? not sure at all

If you want to wait to post the answers, just tell me how many I got right, and which ones I got wrong.

Holy crap — I have zero idea for way too many of those. GOM’s thoughts and guesses are pretty in line with mine. Wow.

I watch way too many re-runs of ‘DaVinci’s Inquest’ and ‘Cold Squad’ at work …

Alright! Thanks for your responses! BMW – a Canadian friend even chimed in – I feel so popular! I didn’t approve her comment until just now, because she nailed it (of course…) I’m posting the answers now!
